The King’s Coronation: feasts for the whole street or treats for a family celebration

What could be more fitting for a day of Royal celebrations than a beautiful fresh cream Victoria sponge?
Food plays such an important role in life events – from a baby shower afternoon tea with home-made scones, fancies and delicate sandwiches to a fun and funky brownie stack topped with your favourite chocolates to mark a birthday.
On May 6 history will be made when the nation stops to watch The Coronation of King Charles III.
Huge screens are being erected across the country to enable communities to get together and watch the event with friends and family.
In Stoke-on-Trent, screens will be available in Hanley at Smithfield. This is one of 30 locations across the UK chose to ensure as many people as possible have the opportunity to watch King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla be crowned at Westminster Abbey.
Meanwhile the owners of the Trentham Estate, just a few miles from The Glost House cafe, is also putting up large screens in its Italian Gardens for visitors and pass holders to enjoy. As well as streaming the event live, the Coronation will be shown again on Sunday May 7, and a packed programme of entertainment is planned including vintage fairground rides, singers performing in the gardens and outdoor theatre.
And of course hundreds of thousands of people are expected to travel to London to view the Royal procession.
The country is marking the Coronation with an extra bank holiday on Monday May 8 and communities are being urged to come up with joyful ways to celebrate such as street parties and performances.
Will The Glost House be open on Bank Holiday Monday?
The Glost House is open as usual on Monday May 8 2023 from 10am until 4pm. We are open for lunch, breakfast, snacks, cake and drinks including afternoon tea if booked in advance.
The Glost House will be closed on Saturday May 6, the day of the Coronation, as we understand our customers will be attending big screen events such as those listed above, watching history being made on TV at home or getting their friends, family and neighbours together for their own outdoor party.
But as a cafe which specialises in home-made food we can still be part of your special events!
The Glost House offers a click and collect service as well as buffet catering.
Our click and collect menu is available on our website – www.theglosthouse.co.uk/takeaway-menu – or you can get in touch ahead of the big weekend to discuss your requirements by calling 01782 479544.
The click and collect menu from The Glost House was designed specially to complement big occasions from christenings to birthdays, remembrance receptions to anniversaries.
And of course the Coronation of a King is right up there with those occasions.
The menu includes afternoon tea and high tea hampers, freshly made on the day of collection.
You can order whole cakes from The Glost House from a tray of triple chocolate brownies to a fresh cream Victoria sponge with strawberry jam.
We also offer family-size pies and quiches with delicious home-made shortcrust pastry and tasty fillings, or perhaps you would like some puff pastry sausage rolls with British pork sausage meat.
Click and collect at The Glost House
The click and collect system operates on a 48-hour notice period, with customers able to select their collect time during cafe opening hours.
This service will be available on May 6 the day of the Coronation. Although the cafe will not be open for customers to sit in and dine, we are open for click and collect to enable people to order Coronation buffets, lunches and teas.
If you would like something specific then please call us in advance to discuss your order.
Orders via the website are paid for online in advance and confirmation is sent when we have accepted the order.
Again, as we make everything in house and make all products fresh to order, please call The Glost House to discuss any special requests or requirements.
Collection orders can also be made over the telephone, and again full payment will be taken in advance to secure your slot.
Click and collect is available from The Glost House throughout the year with new products and foodie gifts being added all the time.
